The After-Potential that Follows Trains of Impulses in Frog Muscle Fibers
نویسندگان
چکیده
Intracellular recordings of the negative after-potential that follows a train of impulses in frog muscle are described. It is postulated that the cause of this after-potential is an accumulation of potassium, during the train, in an intermediary space that is located between the major portion of the sarcoplasm and the external fluid. The decline of the after-potential is then produced by the exchange of potassium from the intermediary space with sodium from the external fluid.

The Suppression of the Late After-Potential in Rubidium-Containing Frog Muscle Fibers
The late after-potential that follows trains of impulses in frog muscle fibers is virtually absent when most of the intracellular potassium is replaced by rubidium and the muscle is immersed in rubidium-containing Ringer's fluid. Its amplitude is also reduced in freshly dissected, potassium-containing muscle fibers that are immersed directly in Rb-Ringer's fluid. These findings are discussed in...
متن کاملA new reduced mathematical model to simulate the action potential in end plate of skeletal muscle fibers
Usually mathematicians use Hodgkin-Huxley model or FitzHug-Nagumo model to simulate action potentials of skeletal muscle fibers. These models are electrically excitable, but skeletal muscle fibers are stimulated chemically. To investigate skeletal muscle fibers we use a model with six ordinary differential equations. This dynamical system is sensitive to initial value of some variables so it is...
متن کاملThe Relation Between the Late After-Potential and the Size of the Transverse Tubular System of Frog Muscle
This is an investigation of the effects on the late after-potential of immersing frog sartorius muscles in three kinds of modified Ringer's fluid; hypertonic, low chloride, and potassium-free. The late after-potential has been attributed to the depolarizing effect of an accumulation of potassium, during a preceding train of impulses, in the intermediary space of the model of a muscle fiber prop...
متن کاملTonic activity of parasympathetic efferent nerve fibers hyperpolarizes the resting membrane potential of frog taste cells.
We investigated the relationship between the membrane potential of frog taste cells in the fungiform papillae and the tonic discharge of parasympathetic efferent fibers in the glossopharyngeal (GP) nerve. When the parasympathetic preganglionic fibers in the GP nerve were kept intact, the mean membrane potential of Ringer-adapted taste cells was -40 mV but decreased to -31 mV after transecting t...
متن کاملThe Histological Evidences for Developmental Alternations in the Transmitting Time of Impulses along the Thalamocortical Tract
Change in transmitting time of impulses along axons is traditionally attributed to two parameters: the myelin formation and the diameter of neurite, both rising during the postnatal development. In the previous study, we showed that conduction velocity of the fibers projecting from the thalamus to the layer IV of the somatosensory (barrel) cortex increases as a function of age. However, the con...
